  1. Ability to operate on US Highway • Rating = 3 • More than likely will not be transported on a US highway (will be carried in another vehicle) • More off road use oriented than “on road” use • Speed is a function of power, higher speeds require more power • Vehicle purpose is to aide troops, not speed away from them • Unmanned / drive by wire – not suitable for road use (potential safety issue)

  2. Dash Speed • Rating = 2 • Used to get away from potential hazards • Speed used to compensate for weak armor • Increased agility • Can be used for short power bursts – used for hill / obstacle climbing and for pulling other equipment

  3. Gross Vehicle Weight • Rating = 1 • Increased weight = requires more power to move, the lighter the better • Low ground pressure • Reduced overall size (beneficial for transporting vehicle and maneuvering around obstacles) • Increased operating range (less fuel consumption) • Low weight allows the vehicle to move quicker with a smaller power plant

  4. Payload Space – Ease of loading/tie downs • Rating = 2 • Increased accessibility will reduce loading/unloading time (for situations under heavy pressure – combat!) • Good tie downs = cargo doesn’t leave vehicle • Would like to allow for ample cargo space • Design for inclement weather (rain, sunshine, dust, maybe snow!)

  5. On Road Operating Range • Rating = 2 • Do not want to have to keep refueling / recharging vehicle after a 10 mile venture • Forces fuel efficient vehicle design (aids alternative fuel concept) • Can be used as a transport between outposts during combat situations • Lengthened vehicle maintenance intervals (will be used for longer periods versus sitting idle)

  6. Speed it can be towed at • Rating = 2 • When being pulled, use DC motors to generate electricity • Could potentially be pulled at highway speeds or higher • Forces robust vehicle design to account for additional stresses from being pulled • Allows for easy tow points incase of vehicle malfunction or incase the vehicle gets stuck

  7. Transportability • Rating = 2 • Vehicle can’t be driven across an ocean • Will allow vehicle to be transported in a quicker vehicle • Will allow vehicle to be packaged with similar vehicles or other equipment more efficiently • Vehicle must be designed smaller to fit into predetermined container sizes • If the vehicle is sized accordingly, the vehicle can be transported in a variety of containers • Design so the vehicle can be air dropped – robust design characteristics
