Sports Injuries • Healthcare professionals who treat injuries need to know how the healthy body works so they can use the information they obtain from examining injuries to decide the best form of treatment… • Healthcare professionals include: - • Physiotherapists (who use massaging and manipulation techniques to treat muscle, ligament and joint injuries and advice on exercise programmes following an injury) • Scientists who use biomechanics to study the science of movement • Biomaterial scientists who can advise on appropriate materials and methods to create artificial joints and limbs

Sports Injuries • Injuries may result in: - • Damaged ligaments • Pulled or torn muscles • Tendon rupture • Torn cartilage • Damaged joints • Dislocation or fractured bones • Worn or injured joints can be replaced using artificial joints made from appropriate materials (the materials chosen are crucial, with properties such as hardness, density, stiffness, flexibility, toughness / brittleness, compressive and tensile (breaking) strength, thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity all being crucial)

Task I • Your initial task is to research what sports injuries may results in, and take this information and produce a single side of informative revision for your exam – the key injuries are: - • Damaged ligaments • Pulled or torn muscles • Tendon rupture • Torn cartilage • Damaged joints • Dislocation or fractured bones
