Networking for Healthcare Quality Professionals Brown Bag Lunch Lecture MHQP 5/16/13 Part 1- Networking In-person Mary Larweck RN, MS, CIC, CPHQ Akhil Sanjay Rao, MS
Part 1- Objectives • 1- Describe what is networking • 2- Why to network • 3-Where does in person networking take place • 4- Identify key elements of networking “how-to” • 5- Identify the benefits of in-person networking • 6- Provide examples of networking tactics that have worked well for others
What Does Networking Mean? • Meeting & connecting with others for a purpose • Establishing a relationship • Willing to share and ask for expertise • Helping others to help themselves and each other • Being a mentor and a mentoree
Why Network? • To make valued connections • To learn from others • To help with questions • To help others • To make connections for the future • To increase your sphere of influence
The Where? • Networking can take place : • Work meetings • Professional group events • Lunches/coffee • Follow-up to something read • Online…LinkedIn? • Social events • Continually look for new places to connect
Networking-The How • Attend events where you can meet others with a purpose: i.e. I will meet 2 people that I feel I can connect with again • Select events related to but not necessarily in your area of work/expertise • When you meet someone you want to potentially connect with again find something to send or give them i.e. book, contact, reference, name, place, etc. • Keep a log of contacts and follow-up
Con’t • To make that valued connection-Smile, shake hands, & find a common point of reference in the first few minutes. Remember the business card! • If you are at an event and you feel uncomfortable; act like you are the host and introduce your self to other and then introduce those folks to each other. • Most people’s networks are too narrow-just those in their work specialty. By broadening the scope you will have more resources when you really need them.
Next Steps • Read about networking • Assess what works for you • Set a networking goal (I want to meet 2 people in X company within the next 6 moths) • Keep a log • Network regularly, not just when an opportunity arises • Follow-up with those on your networking list • Know who your most valued connections are
Cautions • Don’t overdue, you still need time to do your work • Don’t be afraid to help others-you will benefit! • Do what meets your need + a little more
Networking Benefits • Increased sources of information • Increased access to employee/er connections • Increased visibility & connectivity (internal & external benefit to organization) • Personal skill building & satisfaction • Career advances • Helping others!

Types of LinkedIn networkers LinkedIn Networking
LION • Linked In Open Networkers (LION) • Are totally open and will accept any invitation. • The idea here is to connect to as many people as possible in order to reach out to more people. • A larger network is particularly useful when prospecting for leads and doing research on people and companies.
Professional Networker • Professionals connecting up to further each others’ careers • You don’t actually have to have met the other person but you will have dealt with them and deem there is a value being connected for both your careers.
Exclusive networker • This category of people will only ever connect to people they know well, trust and respect. • Exclusive networker is actually not increasing their connections, merely storing them digitally on LinkedIn. • Very selective and can be drawn upon for passing on introductions and recommendations.
