Professor the Honourable Arthur K C Li • An outstanding educator, administrator, and surgeon. • Educated in Hong Kong, Cambridge University and the Royal Free Hospital in London. • His early surgical training was in Cambridge and at the Royal Free Hospital where he became Consultant Surgeon and Senior Lecturer. He received his MD from the University of Cambridge.
Founding Chairman of the Department of Surgery Chinese University of Hong Kong Dean of Medicine and then Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Secretary for Education and Manpower of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government. Executive Council of the HKSAR until 2007
As Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, Professor Li guided CUHK through Hong Kong's political transition when China resumed sovereignty over the territory. He laid the foundation for the University's advancement in the new century whilst safeguarding its academic freedom and autonomy. • Major academic developments during his term included among other things the establishment of the Department of Ophthalmology,the School of Chinese Medicine, the School of Public Health, the School of Pharmacy, and the Nethersole School of Nursing. • Professor Li has laid great emphasis on quality assurance mechanisms for teaching and the fostering of academic links with many centres of excellence worldwide..
Professor Li has devoted himself to the development of higher education and medical services in Hong Kong. • Of the various social service organizations, medical associations, and educational bodies in which he was and still is involved include the Education Commission, Committee on Science and Technology, the Hospital Authority, the Hong Kong Medical Council, the University Grants Committee, the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong, and the United Christian Medical Services Board. • He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation and the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute, Vice President of the Association of University Presidents of China and a Council member of the University of Melbourne
Professor Li's remarkable contributions in medicine, education and social service have won him many honours and lectureships, including: • the Gold Bauhinia Star, • an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, • The President's Gold Medal of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. 2008 • Annual Massachusettes General Hospital/ Johns Hopkins visiting lectureship • Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Rupert Downes Lecturer 2008
