Modal verbs • One form (I/You/They/He can) • Always followed by a verb in basic form. I should go. He must learn . They can swim. • Negative = modal verb+not We mustn’t speak loud. • Question = modal verb – S – V Can you dance? • Sometimes modal verbs are described in different words(have to, be able to, be allowed to)
Must • Must – present tense • Future, past – have to will have to/had to • In present tense Must – vnitřní přesvědčení Have to – vnější okolnosti • I really must study more. I’m miserable. • I have to clean my room. (My parents told me.)
Must/mustn’t/ don’t have to • Must/have to – muset (příkazy) • Mustn’t – nesmět, mít zakázáno • Don’t have to - nemuset
Should Should – měl by (rada, slabý příkaz) • youshould – měl bys • youshouldn‘t – neměl bys • Almost never in questions.
Can • Can – moct (mít povoleno – beallowed to) umět (být schopen – beable to) • Makes no difference in present tense • Makesdifference in futureand past tenses (especiallyfuture) • Negative – cannot/can‘t
