  1. Geometry Regents Exam Wednesday, June 19, 2013 8:00am

  2. What should I bring to the exam? • Pens (Blue & Black) • Sharpened Pencils with erasers • Compass • Straightedge • Graphing Calculator (w/ new batteries) • School ID • Clear Zip-Lock bag (for all above items) • TEXTBOOK (if you haven’t returned it yet)

  3. Test Format THERE ARE 38 QUESTIONS. REMEMBER: YOU MUST ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS! PART I = 28 MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS @ 2 PTS EACH Total = 56 pts. PART II = 6 OPEN ENDED QUESTIONS @ 2 PTS EACH Total = 12 pts. PART III = 3 OPEN ENDED QUESTIONS @ 4 PTS EACH Total = 12 pts. PART IV = 1 OPEN ENDED QUESTIONS @ 6PTS Total = 6 pts. TOTAL POINTS = 86

  4. TIPS FOR SUCCESS • #1 – PROCESS OF ELIMINATION • For multiple choice questions, eliminate answers that do not make sense.

  5. TIPS FOR SUCCESS • Example of Process of Elimination: In the accompanying diagram of Quad ABCD, E is the midpoint of AC & BD. Triangle AEB can be proved congruent to triangle CED by (1) HL ≅ HL (3) SAS ≅ SAS (2) AAA ≅ AAA (4) SSA ≅ SSA ONLY POSSIBLE CHOICE IS #3 – BE SMART & CHECK ALL CHOICES A B E C D (No Rt ’s) (Similar) (Not Valid)

  6. TIPS FOR SUCCESS • #2 –DO NOT stay on a question for too long. • Save yourself frustration and move on to the next question. • You may find by doing another question that something “clicks” about the question you could not figure out.

  7. TIPS FOR SUCCESS • #3 – Know your calculator AND your formula sheet. • Use your calculator whenever possible, even for the “easy” questions. It is especially useful for checking your work, and for the “plug-in” multiple choice questions. • Use calculator to verify all graphing questions and equation of a line questions. Even on part I. • REMEMBER: Put fresh batteries in your calculator BEFORE the exam. • Be aware of which formulas you will be given and which ones you need to study.

  8. TIPS FOR SUCCESS • FORMULAS • Formulas/Rules you need to study (not on formula sheet). • Slope, Midpoint & Distance • Special Right Triangles • Area and Circumference of a Circle • Perimeter and Area of Polygons • Pythagorean Theorem • Locus (5 basic loci) • Circle Rules (Finding Angles, Arcs, Segments) • Polygons (Interior & Exterior Angle Degree Measures) • Transformation Rules • (Reflections, Rotations, Translations, Dilations, Isometries)

  9. TIPS FOR SUCCESS • #4 – SHOW ALL WORK (parts II, III, IV) • “For all questions in this part, a correct numerical answer with no work shown will receive only 1 credit.” - - A portion of Part II, III, & IV directions • Erase or cross-out anything you do not want to be graded. • ”Box-In” your final answer. • Be neat, use a ruler, label all graphs and diagrams, make sure work is legible!!!

  10. Part II, III, & IV Tips • DO NOT round any numbers until you reach the end of the questions. • Constructions and graphs should be done in pencil. Everything else should be done in PEN. • If you use trial and error, be sure to show at least 3 separate trials for each possible answer, even if you guess correctly after one or two tries. (no guess & check)

  11. TIPS FOR SUCCESS • #5 – CONFIDENCE = SUCCESS • Be confident in your ability. If you did all the review the work before the exam you’ll do fine. • Do not get frustrated. Frustration leads to stress which will not help no matter how much studying you have done.

  12. REMEMBER THE HINTS WE HAVE DISCUSSED EVERY DAY IN CLASS: • Read the questions several times before answering. • Underline key words in the problem. • Look for italicized words (not true, must, always, etc.). • Remember the careless mistakes you’ve made in practice and be aware not to repeat them. • Are you solving for “x”, or are you looking for an angle (or its supplement? • Many times an “obvious” answer is not correct – Do not fall for the “trap” questions. • Check your answers using a different method when possible. • Don’t rush – there are no bonus points for finishing first!

  13. REMEMBER THE QUESTIONS THAT HAVE APPEARED ON EVERY PRACTICE TEST: • Equation of a line: (y=mx + b) & (y-y1 = m(x-x1) • Parallel lines have equal slopes • Perpendicular lines have opposite (neg) reciprocal slopes • “X = #” lines are vertical (pass thru the x-axis) • “Y = #” lines are horizontal(pass thru the y-axis) • Triangle Inequality Theorems • The sum of any 2 sides of a  must be GREATER than the 3rd side • In a , the longest side is opposite the largest  and the shortest side is opposite the smallest . • In a , an exterior  is equal to the sum of the 2 remote interior ’s. • Basic Geometry: (Complementary ’s, Supplementary ’s, Vertical ’s) • Draw diagrams for locus questions – even on Part I

  14. Little Things to Keep in Mind CONSTRUCTIONS • You MUST use compass and straight edge! • Copy a line segment • Copy an Angle • Bisect a Line Segment (perpendicular bisector) • Bisect an Angle • Parallel to a given line, thru a given point • Construct an Equilateral Triangle

  15. Little Things to Keep in Mind LOGIC • Conjunction: (ᴧ “and”) T ᴧ T = T • Disjunction: (V “or”) F V F = F • Conditional: ( “if…then”) T  F = F • Biconditional: (↔ “if and only if”) T ↔ T = T & F ↔ F = T • Related Conditionals: Conditional is p  q • Inverse ~p  ~q • Converse q  p • Contrapositive ~p  ~q LOGICALLY EQUIVALENT * Law of Detachment & Law of Syllogism

  16. Little Things to Keep in Mind Concurrency Incenter: The point of concurrence of the triangle's angle bisectors. Equidistant from the sides of a triangle Centroid: The point of concurrence of the triangle's three medians. Centroid divides the median in a 2:1 ratio (2x:x) Circumcenter: The point of concurrence of the triangle's three perpendicular bisectors . Will be outside the triangle if the triangle is obtuse. Equidistant from the vertices of a triangle. Orthocenter: The point of concurrence of the triangle's three altitudes. Will be outside the triangle if the triangle is obtuse

  17. BRING IT ON!!! We are all ready to achieve mastery! Set your goals high and you will achieve them. Treat each question as the most important one, and don’t take any question for granted. You have three hours for the test and most of you will not even need half that time. Check, double check and triple check your work… if you can find one mistake it is worth the time and effort.
