  1. KEY CONCEPT Development progresses in stages from zygote to fetus.

  2. blastocyst uterine wall Implantation of blastocyst The fertilized egg implants into the uterus and is nourished by the placenta and umbilical cord.Ectopic pregnancy – attaches somewhere else (tubes) • ectoderm develops into skin and nervous system • The zygote becomes a blastocyst(hollow ball of cells 70-120 cells) by Mitosis and implants in the uterus. 5 days • mesoderm develops into Internal tissues and organs • endoderm develops into digestive organs and their lining

  3. Embryonic membranes protect and nourish the embryo. • The blastocyst becomes an embryo. • amniotic sac cushions embryo. • placentaconnectsmother and embryo. • Chorion – membrane that helps to nourish through villi • umbilical cord connects embryo to placenta. Contains twoarteries and a vein. ExchangeO2, CO2, wastes, nutrients • Blooddoesn’t mix! • Mother’simmune • system would attack • due to foreign • antigen.

  4. Rh disease

  5. A zygote develops into a fully formed fetus in about 38 weeks. Human pregnancies are divided into trimesters. (3 months) • 1st trimester: body plan and early development stem cells differentiate into specific types of cells most critical time of development! 9 weeks= Fetus (1 inch) 2.5 million neurons formingper minute! 100 billion by birth

  6. 2nd trimester: fetus more active, developed • Starts to look human, about 12 inches long

  7. 3rd trimester: all organs fully formed • After about 38 weeks, fetus is ready to be born. • Usually 7 to 9 lbs. and 20 inches • Premature baby – born more than 3 weeks before due • Babies born at 23 weeks have survived.

  8. The mother affects the fetus, and pregnancy affects the mother. • The fetus depends on the mother for all its nutrition. • mother's diet must support fetal health (Prenatal vitamins) • mother must avoid toxic chemicals – alcohol, tobacco, drugs • Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) mental retardation, learning disabilities.

  9. The mother’s health is affected by pregnancy in a number of ways. • increasein Calories ( 300 calories)and body weight (avg. 26 lbs.) • Underweight – learning disabilities, • impaired immune system, delayed • development • pregnancy hormones affecting homeostasis • Gestational diabetes, morning sickness, depression – post-partum • regular medical checkups needed
