Norman Borlaug By AbhiBobba
Early Life • Great grandchild of Norwegian immigrants • Born on March 25, 1914 in Cresco, Ohio • Eldest of four children • He started working on his family’s 106 acre farm at the age of 7
Education • He attended Cresco public schools all the way through twelfth grade • He enrolled in The University of Minnesota in 1933 • He received a Ph.D in plant pathology and genetics in 1942
His Model • Borlaug hypothesized that increasing the productivity of agriculture on the best farmland can help control deforestation by reducing the demand for new farmland.
His Method • Borlaug genetically engineered a more productive variety of wheat. • With this he was able the increase efficiency on farmland. • Because more food was being produced per unit of farmland, there was no need to clear out forests to make more farmland.
His Method • He proved that we can get the best of both worlds by increasing farmland efficiency • By creating superior wheat, he was able to increase food output without sacrificing the environment.
