Pilgrims • Protestant Christians that were called Pilgrims or Separatists • They were unhappy with the policies of the Church of England • Tried to escape religious persecution (treated harshly) • They first fled to Holland and then in 1620 decided to head to America on a boat known as the Mayflower.
Plymouth, Massachusetts • They were trying to go to Virginia, but a storm blew them off course and they landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts (Cape Cod)
Mayflower Compact • Since there was no government set up in Plymouth they created the Mayflower Compact before getting off the boat. • It was a social contract that established a SELF GOVERNING colony • Written and signed in 1620
Puritans • Another group of English Protestants came to practice their religion without persecution. • Puritans wanted to “purify” the Church. • Landed in Massachusetts Bay • Wanted to establish a “City Upon a Hill” – a symbol of goodness and virtuous living for all the world to see
