  1. Puritans and Pilgrims New England Colonies Established

Who are Puritans? • Puritans opposed many of the rituals and traditions of the Church of England –the established state church • They wanted to “purify” it by removing many of the ceremonies and rigid rules and hierarchy • They thought each individual should access God through prayer, reading Bible, and worship. • Ministers respected but not the ultimate authority of the Church

  3. Separatists • Instead of reforming the Anglican Church they broke off and became separatists • First moved to Holland, then decided to come to America • Became known as the Pilgrims

  4. The Mayflower • Voyaged aboard the Mayflower in 1620 • Arrived in Massachusetts • Founded the Plymouth Colony

  5. Mayflower Compact • Signed by men of the ship • Goal was to establish their government in America

  6. Mayflower Compact • “just and equal laws” • “for the general good of the colony” • Laws approved by the majority • Landmark and important piece of American democratic government

  8. Massachusetts Bay Colony • Also founded by a group of Puritans- led by John Winthrop • Felt the burdens of economic, political, and religious persecution in England • They formed the Massachusetts Bay Company-a joint stock enterprise and set up its headquarters in Massachusetts

  9. Arrival • 1630- arrived in America • Founded the site of Boston, MA • 17 ships and over 1,000 colonists in the first year (bigger and more organize than previous colonies) • Eventually, it incorporated Plymouth

Plymouth Colony in 1620 • Came for religious freedom for them and others • Puritan only • 17 ships- 1,000 people • Est. Massachusetts Bay Colony in Boston in 1630 • Came for THEIR religious freedom, did not accept other’s religions
