  6. Naval Mutiny at Kiel forces Kaiser to Abdicate Eventually, the mutiny spread throughout the German Armed Forces. Kaiser Wilhelm was told by General Hindenberg that the loyalty of the army could no longer be guaranteed.

The End of the War • “Treaty of Brest-Litovsk” ended war for Russia 3/1918 • German General Ludendorff attacks in “Second Battle of the Marne” but is stopped 7/1918 • German military collapsed, Kaiser William II abdicated and socialist leaders declare the “Weimar Republic” in 11/1918. • New Weimar Republic agrees to armistice 11/11/1918. • Nationalist revolution breaks out in Austria-Hungary and autonomy is achieved in Austria, Hungary, Czech state, Serbs in Yugoslavia. • In Germany, revolution continued between radical communists and moderate socialists = moderates win.

  8. .The Treaty of Versailles . 1919 at the Paris Peace Conference • Woodrow Wilson pushed for • “self-determination” of nations, • a League of Nations and lenient • peace terms for Germany. • David Lloyd George and George • Clemenceau had little interest in • a League of Nations and feared • threat of future German invasion, • therefore, they demanded harsher • terms… REVENGE!! Lloyd George of England, Orlando of Italy, Clemenceau of France and Woodrow Wilson

Terms of the Versailles Treaty: • League of Nations (US rejected treaty due to the League). • German colonies went to France, Britain, Japan “mandates”. • Alsace-Lorraine was returned to France • German army limited to 100k and could never rearm the Rhineland. • Germany had to pay $33 billion reparations and accept the “War Guilt Clause”. • Separate treaties with other defeated Central Powers • Austria-Hungary divided and lost Yugoslavia, Poland, Romania, Czechoslovakia. • Ottoman Empire was broken up and divided among Britain and France (Syria, Iraq, Transjorden, Palestine). • Balfour Declaration stated Britain favored a Jewish homeland in Palestine in support of the Zionist Movement (Herzl).
