  1. Spatial presentation and analyses of police evidences Tomislav Iskra Ministry of Interior General Police Directory Operation and Communication centre

  2. Main topics • GIS in police • Police evidences • Transferring evidences in GIS • Building GRID layers • Application for analyzing • Live presentation • Conclusion • Debate

  3. GIS in police • Using GIS in police besides analyzing • Address searching • Other location searching • Directing police patrols • Gathering spatial information • Orientation in space • Making operation maps • Show emergency calls locations • GPS location of vehicles

  4. Police evidences suitable for analyzing in GIS • traffic accidents and traffic offences • violation of public order • crime acts • other events (working accidents, fires, suicides,…)

  5. Maintaining police evidences and preparing them for GIS • A policeman takes notes about the event • After return to the station the policeman or an administrative worker enter data of the event into the computer application • All events are stored into a databases • Events have a spatial parameter for which they are suitable for presenting in GIS

  6. Preparation of evidences for presenting and analyzing in GIS • A program on main computer adds X and Y coordinates referring to the spatial geocoded databases (houses, roads, border) • Evidences are converted into ASCII format and exported • With the program within GIS data in ASCII format are converted into the geodatabases which are used for presenting and analyzing in GIS Reference geodatabases

  7. Calculating density – building a GRID layer • Geodatabase layers of density show us how events of certain type are distributed across the area • An area is divided into 100 meters squares • For each square number of events of certain type is counted • The results of counting are stored into a geodatabase 3 1 2 5 5 3 4 3 2 4 3 7

  8. Application for analyzing • Easy to use application with fast results • Simple spatial object selection for analyzing • Standard types of analyses suitable for time and space compare • Adding new analyses without changing the program code

  9. Live presentation • Analysis of traffic accidents by cause, consequences, time, weekday, … • Presentation of violation of public order density • Analysis of violation of public order by time and weekday • Analysis of crime acts by type and place

  10. Conclusion • Make analyzing easier • Presenting results on maps • Can be used all policemen in police • Standardize procedures • Results can be compared in space and time
