#6 – John Quincy Adams • During the Revolutionary War he received most of his education from his mother and father. • 1777: At age 10 he went with his father on diplomatic missions in Paris and attended the University of Leiden. • 1785: returned to the U.S. – continued his education at Harvard.
#6 – John Quincy Adams • 1790: passed the bar exam- became a lawyer in Boston. • 1794-97: U.S. minister to the Netherlands (diplomat) • 1797-1801: appointed minister to Berlin (diplomat) • July 26, 1797: Married Louisa Catherine Johnson • 1803: elected a U.S. Senator from Massachusetts. • 1806-09: Taught at Harvard (teacher)
#6 – John Quincy Adams • 1809-14: Pres. Madison appoints him minister to Russia (diplomat) • He was sent to make peace negotiations for the War of 1812. (Treaty of Ghent) • 1815-17: President Madison appoints him minister to England. • 1817-24: Pres. Monroe appoints him as Secretary of State.
#6 – John Quincy Adams • Election of 1824: • 3 candidates for President: • John Q. Adams, Andrew Jackson, and Henry Clay • Result: Andrew Jackson received the popular votes. However, no candidate received the majority of votes needed to become President. • Who decides?
#6 – John Quincy Adams • The House of representatives decides….just like the election of 1801 • Decision: Henry Clay decided to back out of the race. In exchange he asks his supporters to choose John Quincy Adams as President. • Adams then appoints Clay as his secretary of state. Andrew Jackson is furious. He believes that this is a ”crooked deal”. • 1825-29: Elected the 6th President of the United States. • 1828: Passes the Tariff of abominations: places protective tariffs on foreign goods. (import taxes) Angers the south!
#6 – John Quincy Adams • He is unable to run for a second term because of the deal made in the election of 1824. • 1830-48: Elected as a U.S. House of Representative member from Massachusetts. • 1841: (United States v. Amistad) Adams defends the Amistad Africans. They are able to return to Africa. • February 23, 1848: Died in the U.S. Capital building (stroke)

(saved lots of money) • 1828: Tariff of abominations passed. • 1829: B&O Railroad constructed. (Baltimore and Ohio Railroad) • No states admitted
