  1. 7-16th grade math Customary Units of Measurement

  2. Objective • To convert one unit of customary measurement to another. • Why? To know how to convert measurements used in the United States (mostly): units of weight, length, and capacity.

  3. California State Standards AF 2.1: Convert from one unit of measurement to another (e.g., from feet to miles, …) MR 1.0: Make decisions about how to approach problems.

  7. Conversions in Customary Units

  8. How to Solve Conversions 1) Decide the ‘magic number’ between the two units of measure. Write down the number between them 2) To change from a smallerunit to a larger unit, divide 3) To change from a largerunit to a smaller unit, multiply. 4) Check your work for reasonableness. a) 36 ft = ___ yd ft < yd; divide magic number = 3 36 ÷ 3 = 12 36 ft = _12_ yd b) 36 ft = ___ in ft > in; multiply magic number = 12 36 x 12 = 432 36 ft = _432_ in

  9. How to Solve More Conversions You might have to divide or multiply fraction or use remainders…. c) 20 oz = ____ lbs d) 21 ½ qt = ____ pt c) 20 oz = ____ lbs oz < lbs; divide magic number = 16 20 ÷ 16 = 1.25 or 1 ¼ 20 oz = _1.25_ lbs d) 21 ½ qt = ____ pt qt > pt; multiply magic number = 2 21.5 x 2 = or 43 x 2 2 1 21 ½ qt = _43_ pt

  10. How to Solve More Conversions You might have to do multiple steps to get the answers …. e) 9 yd, 2 ft = ____ in f) 1 ¼ T = ___ lb g) 21 qt = ___ gal e) 9 yd, 2 ft = ____ in (9 x 36) + (2 x 12) 324 + 24 = 348 9 yd, 2 ft = _348_ in f) 1 ¼ T = ___ lb (1.25 x 2000) = 2500 1 ¼ T = _2500_ lb g) 21 qt = ___ gal (21 ÷ 4) = 5 r ¼ 21 qt = _5.25_ gal or 5 ¼ gal

  11. Try It! • 1 yd = ___ in, so 3 yd = __ in • 1 ft = ___ in, so ⅓ ft = __ in • 12 in = ___ ft, so 6 in = ___ ft • 1 lb = ___ oz, so ¼ lb = ___ oz 1) 1 yd = _36_ in, so 3 yd = _108_ in x 2) 1 ft = _12_ in, so ⅓ ft = _4_ in ÷ 3) 12 in = _1_ ft, so 6 in = _½_ ft ÷ • 1 lb = _16_ oz, so ¼ lb = _4_ oz ÷

  12. Try Some More! 9) 9 qt = ___ gal ÷ 4 = 2.25 or 2 ¼ gal 10) 1 pt = ___ fl oz X 16 = 16 fl oz 12) 2 oz = ___ lb 16 ÷ 128 = 0.125 or ⅛ lb. • 12 oz = ___ lb • 1 gal = ___ pt • 5 c = ___ pt • 10 ½ lb = ___ oz • 9 qt = ___ gal • 1 pt = ___ fl oz 12) 2 oz = ___ lb • 12 oz = ___ lb ÷ 16 = 0.75 or ¾ lb 6) 1 gal = ___ pt X 8 = 8 pt 7) 5 c = ___ pt ÷ 2 = 2.5 or 2 ½ pt 8) 10 ½ lb = ___ oz X 16 = 168 oz

  13. Objective Review • To convert one unit of customary measurement to another. • Why? You now know how to convert measurements used in the United States (mostly): units of weight, length, and capacity. • Remember to change a larger unit to a smaller unit, multiply • Remember to change a smaller unit to a larger unit, divide

  14. Independent Practice • Complete problems 13-29 • Copy original problem first. • Show all work! • If time, complete Mixed Review: 32-40 • If still more time, work on Accelerated Math.
