Atlanta Sewer System Amy Russ Alex Clark Peggy Cooke
Outline • Atlanta Sewer System: Today • Replacement of the System • Plans • Cost and Funding • Who is paying for this system?
Many pipes are nearly 100 years old • Problems with Old Pipes • Combined Sewage Outflow • Sanitary Sewage Overflows • Clean Water Atlanta
Over the next 12 years, the City of Atlanta will inspect, repair and where necessary, replace every foot of the 4,000 miles of sanitary sewers • 5 Point Plan
Sewer System Evaluation • Will evaluate over 60,000 manholes and 2,200 miles of sanitary sewers • Evaluation is determined by categorizing sewers • Sewer sheds • Sewer groups
Cost and Funding • City must pay a civil penalty • The citizens are forced to pay for the replacement • Water bills have increased between 10% and 40% • Middle to lower class • Small businesses
“This is a clear case of you have to pay now or you pay later and lateris always more costly.” -Mayor Shirley Franklin
Is the 5 Point Plan a good idea? Are there better ways of tackling this problem?
