  1. ‘Goggles’ Aim to Thwart Drunken Emailing By: Amber Hottenroth

  2. Scenario • It’s Friday night • You have been drinking a little too much • When you get home, you decide to send a quick email to an ex girlfriend or ex boyfriend or a boss that you absolutely hate • In the morning you have only a small recollection of the night before • Then come the regrets

  3. What is it? • ‘Mail Goggles’ is a new test-phase feature in the free Google Gmail service • The name comes from the slang term ‘beer goggles’ or the curious affect alcohol can have on a person without their knowledge

  4. What it does • If you are the kind of person that gets a little tipsy and likes to send emails, then this is for you • The Google feature requires you to solve a few math problems in short order before being able to hit send on an email

  5. The Specifics • The ‘Goggles’ can kick in late at night or on the weekends • If your logical thinking skills are intact, Google is betting that you are sober enough to work out the repercussions of sending that email • The Gmail engineer John Perlow designed ‘Goggles’ because he once sent a drunken late night email to his ex girlfriend saying that they should get back together…he had some regrets the next morning

  6. How to get ‘Goggles’ • To activate ‘Goggles’, Gmail users should click the “Settings” link at the top of a Gmail page, then go to the “Labs” section
