  3. stage 1 1607 – 1820 • England • Why? Religious Freedoms & Economic Reasons – work • Received? Most were welcomed, some restrictions on rights such as testifying in court and owning land • Roman Catholic and Quakers

  4. Stage 2 1821-1890 • Germany & Ireland • Why? Escape disease and famine (potato) drawn by tales of gold and opportunity • Received? English were resentful these newcomers took away their jobs. Founders were anti-Catholic, churches were burned • China • Why? - economic opportunity came to West Coast • Received? – 1882 all Chinese laborers were banned

  5. Stage 3 1891-1924 • Northern & Western European • Italians, Greeks and Slavic • Why? Economic opportunities • Eastern Europe (Polish, Russian – many were Jewish) • Why? Escape religious persecution • Received? All were blamed for problems in the cities SUCH AS: Overcrowding, filth, crime • 1885 ban those seeking jobs • 1891 bans insane, felons, diseased, anarchists and Illiterates • By 1924 strict quota laws

  6. Stage 4 1924-present • Asia and Latin America • Economic opportunity • Middles East • Economic opportunities and political freedom Received? Japanese interned during WW II, Latinos in South segregated, post 9/11 Middle Eastern people discriminated against
