Dayton Flyers 4-2-5 Defense “Building The Wall”
Philosophy • “Defense is a science not a helter-skelter thing you just luck into.” – Bill Russell • Sample Defense – No buzz words • Not doing a lot of things, just a few things well • Adjustments to a minimum “Same as” • Execution • Discipline – Gap Control • Reacting – Not Reading • Players “fit” in scheme – Big Picture • BUILD THE WALL
Defensive Tackle • Stance and Alignment • 3 point stance, feet parallel or nearly. No more than toe-to-heel stagger. Stance is individualistic with flexibility allowed. • Shoulders parallel to the ground and LOS • Be able to see both offensive lineman (C-OG or OG-OT) • Feet up under you. • Distance from the ball will vary from individual to individual and from play to play. • Key • The ball to head, move when it moves. • Key primary O-lineman (C or OG) • Base Technique • Take a short step forward, thrusting your face mask forward into the lineman bringing both hands up at the same time to the sternum of center • With arms disengage (bench press) the lineman away from your body. • Do not get knocked down. Keep your feet moving. • Gap Stunts • 1. Pirate Step • Step flat towards assigned gap and read the OL inside knee. • Rack backside arm through guard’s head. • Get square and find the ball. Do not get knocked down. • Penetrating Step • Stepping into assigned gap and get up field. • Responsibility • Be such a predominant factor in every play to force our opponent into a double team. • On outside plays, pursue flat, keep your feet, run to the ball. • Know pass and draw situations. • Move around. Cause confusion. Force guards and center to make calls.
