How are sound waves similar to light waves? • They can reflect off objects • Called a echo Strength depends on the reflected surface Ex. Stronger echo’s in a hard surfaced gym, weaker in padded theater
What happens when 2 sound waves come in contact? • Interference – combination of two or more waves that results in a single wave. • Ex. Bands playing different notes at the same time • 2 types: • 1. constructive – compressions overlap both waves resulting in louder sounds because of increased amplitude
What’s the other type? • 2. destructive – compression of one wave overlap the rarefactions of another wave • Results in a softer sound because the amplitude is decreased.
How can opera singers break glass with only their voice? • Resonance – occurs when two objects naturally vibrate at the same frequency • The sound produced by one object causes the other to vibrate • Ex. Striking a tuning fork next to a guitar string, the guitar string will begin to vibrate at the same frequency as the tuning fork
