AAVP schedule & requirement specifications Andrew Faulkner
AA Timeline(from draftPEP) Demonstrator in 2 Phases CoDR Concept Design Review CDR Critical Design Review PRR Production Readiness TRR Test Readiness
Top design decisions...... Urgent (by CoDR April 2011) • Confirm specification in Memo 125: • Frequency range, sensitivity .... Immediate(by CDR, end 2011): • Single or dual element? • Demonstrable element in small array Medium Term (by AAVS1, end 2013) • Station size and configuration • Core configuration • Station system design • digitisation, processing location, data flow Earlier Consideration?
CoDR Key Science Experiments • Scheduled for April 2011 • Flow down from System CoDR in February • Physical • Parameters: • Flux density • Area of sky • Polarisation • Dynamic range • etc • Instrument Technical Specification: • Sensitivity • Survey speed • Configuration • Stability • etc • Potential • Designs: • Collector type • Frequency range • Data rates • etc • Modelling: • Variants • Performance • Cost • Power • Risk SKA Design • Operational • Constraints: • Time allocation • Storage • Power • Operations budget AA-CoDR considers design(s) to progress
Input for AA-CoDR • Science requirements, principally: • Frequency range • Scan angle range • Polarisation performance • Performance prioritisation e.g.: • Major part of frequency band • UV coverage : Sensitivity : Survey speed : Dynamic range etc • Operational constraints: • Power, time allocation, flexibility etc. • Overall SKA process and structures – the review rules... Fixed Cost trade-offs BUT: not starting from zero: Memo 125, Pathfinders, demonstrators, studies etc. An interactive process....
AAVS1 aims Verify the fundamentals of the proposed AA system design • Test the element and array electromagnetics • Forming well understood beams • Evaluate details of the front-end • Likely Trec(f) • Testing matching with LNA over frequency • Electronics designed for low RFI environment • Understanding polarisation properties • Checking array properties Proving ground for AAVS2
AA-CoDR → AAVS1-CDR • Development • Simulation • Select elements types • Test devices • Specify testing and AAVS1 environment Do the work.....!
AAVS1-CDR critical design review • Scheduled for December 2011 • To approve design of AAVS1 AAVS1 broad characteristics.... • Common central facility for AA-low and AA-mid tests • Only large enough to prove fundamentals for electromagnetics and front-end • Single station test • On the chosen SKA site, assuming no delays • Processing starting scaleability
Construction and Test AAVS1 2012 Q3 – 2012 Q4
AAVS2 aims AA-low: mass production test system AA-mid: high dynamic range imaging demo. • Ensure tooled components work properly for AA-low • Next generation processing system evolution. • AA-mid follows AA-low testing and continues to be available as a system Pre-production test for SKA1
AAVS2-CDR critical design review • Scheduled for Q3 2013 • To approve design of AAVS2 AAVS2 broad characteristics.... • AA-low: pre-production test for single, large station. • Use tooled components. Particularly elements • AA-mid: is an interferometer, • small stations, ̶ full imaging perf., • limited “capability” (data rate) • Common central facilities for AA-low and AA-mid • Substantial system size • On the chosen SKA site
AAVS2 Construction, and Commission 2014 Q1 – 2014 Q4 Testing..... 2015 AA-mid: AAVS2 will remain on site.....
SKA1 - PRR Production Readiness Review Q4 2015 Done.....!
