  1. The Erasmus Mundus Programme Isabel Cavaco Igor Khmelinskii University of Algarve, Portugal Novosibirsk University 20 July 2007 Erasmus Mundus

  2. Programmes Coordinated by the University of Algarve: • MSc in Water and Coastal Management • Started in 2004 • Coordinator: Prof. Alice Newton • MSc in Quality in Analytical Laboratories • Will start in 2007 • Coordinator: Prof. Isabel Cavaco Erasmus Mundus

  3. Erasmus Mundus

  4. European Joint Masters in Quality in Analytical Laboratories Why? Because analytical laboratories affect all aspects of modern society Erasmus Mundus

  5. Erasmus Mundus

  6. Importance of Analytical Laboratories Decisions in matters such as depletion of the ozone layer; acid rain; quality of waterways depend on the data provided by analytical laboratories Erasmus Mundus

  7. Importance of Analytical Laboratories • Forensic evidence depends on the results of chemical measurements • National and international trade are critically dependent on analytical results, with chemical composition often the basis for the definition of the value of goods Erasmus Mundus

  8. The cost of errors Erasmus Mundus

  9. European Joint Masters in Quality in Analytical Laboratories Why Quality in Analytical Laboratories? Erasmus Mundus

  10. The Meaning of “Quality” • In common language, it means excellence, something very good • But what is good for one case is not necessarily good for another. Erasmus Mundus

  11. What about analytical results? Is it having the best accuracy ? • Highest accuracy is not always required! • The result should be accurate enough to be fit for purpose Erasmus Mundus

  12. What about analytical results? Ex: Variation of COD (mg/L O2) in river water COD mg/L O2 COD time time Sept - 9.0 Nov - 7.8 Jan - 10.1 Mar - 11.2 Sept - 9.0±5.0 Nov - 7.8 ±5.0 Jan - 10.1 ±5.0 Mar - 11.2 ±5.0 Erasmus Mundus The result should be accurate enough to be fit for purpose

  13. The Concept of “Quality” “Quality” = Fitness for Purpose Erasmus Mundus

  14. What do we mean by “Quality” in analytical results? • Unlike other products, results must inspire the confidence • Of the customer, and of all others who make use of the results. • A result is useless if you don’t trust the laboratory that produced it... • And, of course... results must have a reasonable cost! Erasmus Mundus

  15. How to reach quality? In a systematic way, through a Quality System Erasmus Mundus

  16. International Standards for Quality Systems International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO): • ISO 9001 – “Management systems – Requirements” • ISO 14001 – “Environmental management systems - Requirements with guidance for use “ • ISO 17025 – “General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories” Erasmus Mundus

  17. Quality Systems in Analytical Laboratories ISO 17025 Competence is a requirement ISO 9001 Competence is not evaluated Accreditation Certification Erasmus Mundus

  18. Comparability of results worldwide ISO Erasmus Mundus

  19. Objectives of this programme • Training laboratory scientists and administrators to implement and manage Quality Systems in Analytical Laboratories, focusing on: • Accreditation • Worldwide comparability Erasmus Mundus

  20. What is EJMQAL? • Who is it aimed at? • Which institutions form the consortium? • Structure • Duration • Modules • Research Erasmus Mundus

  21. Who is it aimed at? • Science graduates • Chemistry, Biochemistry, Environmental Sciences, Food Engineering, Clinical Analysis, etc... • Good background in Analytical Chemistry Erasmus Mundus

  22. What makes a good lab director / manager? A good Laboratory Director needs: - Management knowledge - Scientific knowledge of the analytical methods - Data handling knowledge Erasmus Mundus

  23. Structure of the course • Types of modules: • Quality Management modules • Analytical Methods modules • Data Analysis modules Erasmus Mundus

  24. Structure of the course • Module are 2 ECTS each • Students can choose from a large number of modules • Focusing on water analysis, clinical analysis, food analysis... Erasmus Mundus

  25. Discipline: Quality Management • Learning Outcomes: • Design a lab quality system; • Apply quality management to human, material, documentation and financial resources; • Understand the importance of traceability and how to assure it. • Examples of modules: Introduction to Quality Management Preparation and Use of Reference Materials Method validation Erasmus Mundus

  26. Discipline: Analytical Methods • Learning Outcomes: • Detailed knowledge of several analytical techniques; • Advanced knowledge of one or more selected techniques • Modules are grouped by subject, for example Analysis of Organic Components in Natural Water Sample Treatment in Food Analysis Principles of Instrumentation in Clinical Analysis • Or by technique, for example Quantitative IR Spectroscopy Hyphenated Techniques Biosensors Erasmus Mundus

  27. Discipline: Data Analysis • Learning Outcomes: • Statistical tools • Quality control • Estimation of uncertainty • Examples of modules: Measuring variability Uncertainty Measurement in Chemical Tests Multivariate data analysis Pattern Recognition and Classification Signal Processing Erasmus Mundus

  28. European Joint Masters in Quality in Analytical Laboratories Who are the European partners? University of Bergen (Norway) Gdansk University of Technology (Poland) University of Barcelona (Spain) University of Algarve (Portugal) University of Cádiz (Spain) Erasmus Mundus University of Malta (Malta)

  29. Duration • Classes: • 1 academic year (about 30 weeks) • October to June • Take place in the “host” university • Research Project: • 1 academic semester (about 15 weeks) • Takes place in another partner university Erasmus Mundus

  30. Annual Host Universities: 2007-2008 - Portugal 2008-2009 - Poland 2009-2010 - Malta 2010-2011 - Spain 2011-2012 - Norway Erasmus Mundus
