The Alaska Model Now Using dividends from the global commons to pay for a World Basic Income
So, along with many Basic Income advocates, we propose that we revolutionise our taxation systems, moving the emphasis from income tax and sales tax, to taxing the global commons. As such we all owe a huge debt to the Alaska model which has demonstrated the advantages of such an approach
We have carried out much work demonstrating that the resources and technology (mobile phones!) are available for a World Basic Income to be implemented. Today we will share our work in progress on estimating how much the global commons could provide towards a World Basic Income
How much do we need? • Whole world at $10/month - $900 billion • All countries with >10% living in extreme poverty (except India and China) $209 billion • All 'low income' countries with >10% living in extreme poverty $68 billion • 12 poorest countries in the world $16 billion • Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea $2.8 billion • Sierra Leone $0.85 billion
Funding streams from the global commons World Basic Income
This work in progress is non-exhaustive. Other potential sources of commons revenue • Big Data (FB, Google etc.) https://www.ft.com/content/5103204e-7b5b-11e7-ab01-a13271d1ee9c • Inheritance tax • Other taxes on pollution (air, land and sea) • Other taxes on natural resources (oil, minerals etc.)
Our figures are conservative. CO2 tax could raise twice as much if we taxed CO2 at $100/tonne. The EU parliament suggests that FTTs could raise $650 Bn
Our vision is not in competition with national BI efforts but complementary. No doubt if many of these taxes are raised then there will be discussions about their use whether nationally or internationally
The point of World Basic Income is to widen the debate, as well as emphasise that the countries that should start with BI are the poorest in the world. We are trying to mobilise for a BI in Sierra Leone which would cost less than 1 Bn/year
Given that it is possible, we should do it. We’re working on building a movement. Join us!
