Power Work

1. Power Work Think of the book, Would I Ever Lie to You?, brainstorm times you have lied, bullied, or was a victim of one or the other. You may list these times or think of one time and think of details.

3. Expressive Writing It expresses and explores the personal feelings of the writer. The piece may attempt to answer a question, state an opinion or recount the writer's personal experiences. The main expectation of expressive writing is to express feelings and observations personally. First Person Point of View The writing must be directly about the writer. Reflective of life-shaping experiences. The topic can be anything as long as the writing expresses personal thoughts and feelings. Example: "I remember the day my grandma taught me to make apple pie. I was so excited, but then I cried when I couldn't roll out the crust.“

4. Purpose The purpose of a personal expressive may change depending on the type of writing piece. You may express your thoughts and feelings for entertainment, to inform, or to persuade.

Tell Me About Yourself or Someone Else Autobiography- Myself Biography- Someone Else • Someone wanting to tell the story of their lives in an interesting or dramatic way. • They want to create a self-portrait that readers can relate to and perhaps admire. Answer These Questions As You Read: • What kind of life did this person have? • How do I feel about him or her? • Someone telling an interesting story about the events of a person’s life. • Biographers want to create a portrait, or impression, of that person so that you can understand what he or she was really like. Answer These Questions As You Read: • What kind of life did this person have? • What was he or she really like?

Memoirs Memoirs are focused on the significance of a relationship and are supported by memories of specific experiences.  They may focus on any individual person, place, animal, or thing.  The success of the memoir lies in the writer's ability to provide the reader with an understanding of the importance of the relationship.

7. Put these in student – friendly terms. Personal narrative Memoir • Personal narratives are focused on a single significant incident from the writer's life and are supported by details that emphasize the significance of the experience.  The success of the narrative lies in the writer's ability to provide the reader with an understanding of the events and feelings that make the incident important and the author's ideas and interpretation of the experience. • Memoirs are focused on the significance of a relationship and are supported by memories of specific experiences.  They may focus on any individual person, place, animal, or thing.  The success of the memoir lies in the writer's ability to provide the reader with an understanding of the importance of the relationship.

8. Characteristics of a Personal Narrative • TRUE STORY ABOUT ME • ABOUT ONE EVENT IN MY LIFE • ORGANIZED BY TIME (use time transitions) • INCLUDES SENSORY DETAILS (sight, sound, smell, touch, taste) • SHOWS THOUGHTS & FEELINGS
