It was fought between Paraguay-who at the time had the largest army in the area-and the combined forces of Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil. • The Chaco War was fought against Bolivia in the early 1930’s. Bolivia wanted to obtain the Chaco territory to grant them access to the Atlantic via Río Paraguay. Even though Paraguay won the war, they lost half of their population in the process. • A successful military coup in 1989 led by General Andres Rodriguez overthrew dictator Alfredo Stroessner after 35 years of his regime.

Cultural Spotlight • A Paraguayan staple food is SopaParaguaya. It is not a soup as its name suggests, but a type of cheesy cornbread. It is often served with soup though.
Current Issues • Deforestation is a major issue in Paraguay. According to one source 1643 acres per day are being cut down in the Chaco region to accommodate for cattle grazing. • Another issue is sanitation and clean water. Only 67% of the population had access to sanitation in 2000, and only 44% had access to drinking water services. • The third issue is the smuggling of commodities, including drugs, across the “Triple Border” where Paraguay meets Brazil and Argentina. This operation is taking away from the government overseen trade which helps the economy.
