WEB- BASED TRAINING Chapter 4 Virginija Limanauskiene, KTU, Lithuania
Objectives • To provide participants with the understanding of the e-learning role in new economics • To give the knowledge and know-how to design the powerful training • To give skills to create the web-based training classroom or course
Contents • E-Learning • Tools • Powerful Training • Planning and Design • Production • Online Learner Assessment • Implementation (case study) • Course Evaluation
E E-Learning.Use of Educational Technologies The layered framework integrates a bottom-up view of information technology usage and a top-down view of education.
E-Learning. Delivery The delivery is the transmission of educational materials between learners, teachers and providers. The technologies supported delivery of material are: • CD-ROMs, • computer networking • Internet Media Information technology supports these types of physical media: • text, • 2-D, 3-D graphics, • animation, • digital audio • digital video, • virtual reality
Tools • Viewing tools • Development tools: • Common web-publishing tools • Integrated distributed learning environments( multimedia information presentation, collaboration tools, management tools)
Powerful Training • E. training accomplishes specific objectives relevant to participants' success. • E. training meets those objectives without wasting time and energy. • E. training attracts and involves learners and incorporates their experience into the learning. Four components required for effective instruction: • Information presentation • Learner Guidance • Practice with Feedback • Learning Assessment
CASE STUDY:Content of the course package • Web based services for learner: • Online learning material • Online learner assessment • Tutoring • Case studies • Discussions and chat http://elinara.ktu.lt/courses/eurolw
CASE STUDY:The Mediaand Learning Tools Used • Original on-line Web-based learning environment is used • Virtual classroom is based on the dynamic course content publishing using CGI • Main parts: a library, administrator’s room, teacher’s room, student’s room, café • Three languages is supported ( English, Estonian, Lithuanian)
Design Process • Analysis (planning):project plan, needs assessment, audience analysis,content/task analysis, technical analysis and authoring/media tools selection, set learning goals and structure • Design:learning objectives, instructional strategies and lesson designs, interaction design and media treatments, evaluation design • Production and Pilot testing: media production/sourcingprogramming/coding, authoring and integration of media elements, pilot testing (field trials) and revision as needed • Implementation:students’ learning, reporting • Evaluation:learning and effectiveness evaluations
Planning and Design.Presentation structure and storage structure
Production Multimedia production: • Pictures • Sounds • Animation • Video • Virtial reality Example of simulation created with Macromedia Flash
Online learner assessment. Example of Test Tool interface The learners manipulate with the multimedia objects and create learner-generated answers.
The Web-Based System in Action • The server is a computer • The server holds information (learning material) and directs communication • Client is the program (browser, e-mail) • Student use the client program to ask the server for information • Student and teacher use the network to connect to the server
CASE STUDY:Course Administration • Each student belongs to some group during course delivery tour • Students group is attributed to some teacher (tutor) • For the course management administrator’s tools are used • Site services (Guides, information about modules, registration for the course, contact information) are available
CASE STUDY:Tutoring The course requires tutoring. Tutors (teachers) must be trained. The tutor has a responsibility to guide a learning of the one group. Teacher uses the tools: • for learning material loading into library • for course content adaptation for group • test preparation in portfolio • test adaptation for group • test assignment for students' group
Evaluation Types of system evaluation • The platform and software used • The effectiveness • The impact of a learning system on educators and students • The efficiency • The usability • The quality of the system Three simple questions: • What worked for you? • What did not work well for you? • Give three suggestions for improvement.
