  1. Satellite Research and Monitoring Summary of the key issues Jean-Christopher LAMBERT Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy (IASB-BIRA) Brussels, Belgium with contributions from 7th ORM Presenters, CEOS, and the NDACC Satellite WG

  2. Focus • Future of satellite monitoring • Ground-based validation of satellite data • Compliance with current and upcoming requirements => quality strategy (SAT and GB) Focus

  3. Studies Coming Recent Ongoing CALIPSO EPS MetOp-A ACE, Aura (HIRDLS, MLS, OMI, TES), Envisat (GOMOS, MIPAS, SCIAMACHY), HIRS, Odin (OSIRIS, SMR), SBUV-2 Metop-A GOME-2/IASI/GRAS/AMSU, CALIPSO, Cloudsat FY-3 SBUS/TOU, NPP/NPOESS, ADM-Aeolus, EarthCARE, GLORY, STEAM, SWIFT CSA SOAR, STEP, CLIM/AQ mission ESA Earth Explorers: A-SCOPE, PREMIER, TRAQ EU/ESA/EUMETSAT Sentinels 4 and 5, S5 precursor US CLARREO, GEO-CAPE, ACE, GACM, CASS Missions

  5. Missions

  6. Missions

  7. Key Issues • Concerns • Risk of data gap, no backup • Reduction of capabilities • Harmonization • Traceability • Need for sustained measurements • Ozone monitoring • Diagnostics of ozone chemistry • Halocarbons monitoring • Coupling with climate, Essential Climate Variables • Improvement of CTMs and GCMs and data assimilation systems Missions

  9. Moving from concepts to GEOSS implementation • CEOS is the space arm of GEO. • GEO Task DA-06-02 assigned to CEOS WGCV Group on Earth Observations http://earthobservations.org Committee on EO Satellites: http://www.ceos.org WG on Calibration and Validation: http://wgcv.ceos.org GEO-CEOS

  10. GEO Data Quality Strategy • Major topics: • Characterisation and Classification of Cal/Val Sites • Satellite and InSitu Cal/Val Data Access • Methodology and Guidelines for Cal/Val • Harmonisation of Quality Information • Progress in 2007-2008: • CEOS WGCV & ACSG meetings • 2 GEO - CEOS Workshops (Oct. 07/May 08) • EO Cal/Val Portal [http://calvalportal.ceos.org] • GSICS, AVDC, GVDC, GAS… • QA4EO • … GEO-CEOS

  11. GEO Data Quality Strategy Some ozone relevant issues • More traceable and harmonized measurements, validation and quality information (version history, validation history, standards, caveats…) • Improve andharmonize data file content AND metadata: averaging kernels and/or weighting functions (even for column data), error budget (systematic and random), information content • Identification and development of best practices, protocols, guidelines… GEO-CEOS

  12. Data Quality Data Policy Communication and Education GEO-CEOS

  13. Draft under review by CEOS and GEO To be finalized in August 2008 To be distributed after approval by CEOS Plenary

  14. Harmonization: Cooperative Efforts • Aura/Envisat/ACE collaborations • SAUNA Campaigns[http://fmiarc.fmi.fi/SAUNA] • Contact: Bojan Bojkov @nasa.gov, now at @esa.int • ESA/NASA-sponsored with participation of Dobson and Brewer World and Regional Standards , NDACC-certified UVVIS spectrometers, O3S, lidar… and many satellites • Issues revealed/stressed for all GB techniques and for comparison techniques Harmoniz.

  15. Harmonization: Cooperative Efforts • CEOS-ACSG/NSMC topical meeting and NOAA/NSMC cooperation on FY-3 SBUS/TOU • Ozonesonde: JOSIE, BESOS => in progress • Water vapour: NASA MOHAVE => CEOS and ISSI endorsed WG and campaigns, COST • CEOS-endorsed ESA/NASA/NOAA-funded project: 5-year, calibration of Dobson, participants: Dobson Primary World Standard, Regional Standards, Brewer Regional Standards, NDACC-certified DOAS UV-visible spectrometers • Validation Protocols, EU Directive INSPIRE Harmoniz.

  16. Summary of the Key Issues Continuity of satellite ozone profilers High risk of satellite data gaps, missing backups, reduced capabilities; under consideration. Concerns about status and evolution of GB networks Traceability and harmonization of measurements and QA/QC for SAT, GB, and higher level syst. To garantee interoperability/traceability for systems facing high quality requirements of research and monitoring, enhanced cooperation (i) between space agencies, (ii) within ground-based networks, and (iii) between GB, SAT and users, is cucial in the fields of calibration, level-1-to-2 algorithms, validation, data fusion/integration/assimilation, comminication, and education.
