  4. Origins of Greek drama This section examines the purposes of Ancient Greek drama. • Describe what the Ancient Greek city-states were. • Describe why Athens was important as a center of arts and politics. • Evaluate the original religious role of the plays.

  5. Staging the performance This section focuses on how the performances were staged. • Describe the parts of the theater and stage itself. • Explain the use of scenery, costumes and props, including the famous masks. • Evaluate the role of the Chorus and how it changed over time.

  6. Aristotle’s definition of tragedy This section evaluates Aristotle’s view of tragedy. • Describe each part of the structure in a tragedy. • List the characteristics of the tragic hero. • Explain the ideas of catharsis, hamartia and hubris.

  7. Oedipus: • This section will identify and describe the basic elements of the story. • Briefly describe the main characters/performers: Chorus, Oedipus, Tiersias, Jocasta, Creon, the Priest, and the Shepherd. • Explain how fate and hamartia are important in the play.
