Thomas Edison • Opened a research laboratory, invented the light bulb among other things
Alexander Graham Bell • Inventor of the telephone
Elevator • Invented by Werner Von Siemans, contributed to the development of skyscrapers.
Electric Trolley • Developed to transport people from one part of New York to another.
Typewriter • Invented by Christopher Sholes, changed the way that businesses maintained records, also the name of the person that used the machine
Ellis Island • Induction center for immigrants arriving from Europe
Culture Shock • Initial reaction of the immigrants entering the country for the first time
Melting Pot • Mixing of many different cultures to form a culture
Cultural Pluralism • Many cultures together in one place with each maintaining their identity
Nativism • Favoring native born people over immigrants
Urbanization • City’s population continues to expand
Dumbbell Tenements • One room apartments for immigrants, overcrowded and unsanitary
