  1. States of Matter By Audrey#25 and Ashley#20 PLEASE NOTE: We purposely put two mistakes. See if you can find them!

  2. Summary of the Lesson

  3. Vocabulary… • Solid- a form of matter that has a definite shape and volume • Liquid- a form of matter that has a definite volume, but no definite shape • GAS- [yes, time to start giggling and laughing a form of matter that has no definite shape or volume

  4. States of Matter • There are three states of matter…

  5. Solids • Particles are held together very closely. They vibrate in place. • Retains a certain volume and shape • Not easily compressible • Does not flow(like water)

  6. Solids[pictures] Solid Molecules A chair is made of solid molecules

  7. Liquid • Changes shape to match the shape of its container • Assumes the shape of the part of the container which it occupies • Not easily compressible • Flows easily (it’s water…duh)

  8. Liquid[pictures] Liquid Molecules Same volume with different containers

  9. Frozen[a diagram on how ice forms] • Frozen liquid=solid

  10. Liquid[a diagram] • Warming up a solid=liquid

  11. Gas[a diagram on how evaporation works] • Warming up a liquid=gas

  12. Gases[more on it] • Some common types of gases • oxygen(O) • nitrogen(N) • helium(He) • hydrogen(H) • Gases are very compressible, unlike solids and liquids. This is true since gas molecules are farther apart. Gas molecules

  15. By the way, the formal way of saying “the States” is a phase “The States”

  17. As you saw on the diagram on the slide before, the phase of plasma was not included in our science book. Another phase that wasn't not on the diagram or the science book was the phase of Bose-Einstein condensate Even more on “The States”

  18. Bose-Einstein condensate[BEC] • If plasmas are super hot and super excited atoms, the atoms in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) are total opposites. They are super unexcited and super cold atoms.

  19. More on BEC • An ice cube=solid that is cold • An ice cube + around 0°F= atoms begin to clump • Clumping atoms=Bose-Einstein condensate
