  2. Outline of the Passage • Hear Me Psalm86:1-7 • Teach Me Psalm86:8-13a • Help Me Psalm86:15-16

  3. Because God is merciful and powerful, we can humbly approach Him with confidence. He will hear and respond to our prayers according to His loving character. This study will help you improve the quality and depth of your prayer life.

  4. Hear Me Psalm 86:1-71 Hear, O LORD, and answer me, for I am poor and needy. 2 Guard my life, for I am devoted to you. You are my God; save your servant who trusts in you. 3 Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I call to you all day long.

  5. Hear Me 4 Bring joy to your servant, for to you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. 5 You are forgiving and good, O Lord, abounding in love to all who call to you. 6 Hear my prayer, O LORD; listen to my cry for mercy. 7 In the day of my trouble I will call to you, for you will answer me.

  6. Hear Me • There is a pattern in Psalm 86 of PETITION followed by the REASON: • V. 1 – Petition: Lord listen & answer; Reason: David was poor & needy; • V. 2 – Petition: Lord protect & save; Reason: David was faithful & trusting; • V. 3 – Petition: Lord, be gracious; Reason: David persisted in calling God; • V. 4 – Petition: God bring joy; Reason: David hoped in the Lord;

  7. David sounds a little self-righteousness here. We are NOT entitled to God’s blessings. The truth is we do not deserve any of these. • David’s prayer was not from self-righteousness but rather self-awareness of his relationship God. • David said “the Lord is good.” For us “good” is just okay. But in Hebrew, “Good” is absolutely spectacular!

  8. Because of God’s spectacular goodness, God forgives. ONLY God can truly forgive in a way that expunges our misconduct from the divine record, creates clean hearts, and empowers us to restore relationships with others. • Not only will the Lord hear, literally to give ear to prayer, He will also listen, literally pay attention to his prayer. What is the difference between “hear” and “listen?”

  9. The confidence David had, and that we can have in prayer, is that the Lord will answer in a meaningful and beneficial way. Prayer Directions God listens to our prayers! God hears our prayers! God Will Answer!

  11. Teach Me Psalm 86:8-13a8 Among the gods there is none like you, O Lord; no deeds can compare with yours. 9 All the nations you have made will come and worship before you, O Lord; they will bring glory to your name. 10 For you are great and do marvelous deeds; you alone are God.

  12. Teach Me 11 Teach me your way, O LORD, and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name. 12 I will praise you, O Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify your name forever. 13 For great is your love toward me.

  13. Teach Me • We have a very unique God. • There is no god like our God. • God’s works are equally unique: His creation and His redemption. • One day all nations will join before Him in worship and praise to give honor to His name. There is an interestingly word picture for the word HONOR.

  14. Heartfelt worship follows such honor. • David says “For You are great.” An expression of faith and confidence that God is bigger than any problem. • “You alone are God.” • “Teach me Your way.” Includes two attitudes: • A teachable attitude: • A willing attitude to live by that truth:

  15. David asked the Lord to give him “an undivided heart.” To have a heart and mind so focused on pleasing God that nothing divides my attention and direction.

  16. How well do you Know God?Do you desire to Know Him Better? Many of us grew up in Christian homes and went to Christian Schools and through Confirmation. We had good Bible teaching and much of it. But how have we been growing since then? Do we desire to know God even better, to plumb new depths in His Word?

  17. Help Me Psalm 86:15-16 15 But you, O Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness. 16 Turn to me and have mercy on me; grant your strength to your servant and save the son of your maidservant.

  18. Help Me • The Hebrew expression “The Lord was slow to anger” is a great word picture. Literally, David said “the Lord has long nostrils.” • God’s faithful love is a key expression in Hebrew, meaning that we can really count on God, or that He is dependable to love us.

  19. “Turn to me, O God, and grant me mercy.” • Justice: To get what one deserved which meant God would turn away from them. • Mercy: To get what one did not deserve which meant God would turn toward them. • David expresses this undeserved mercy by calling himself “the son of a servant.” Since David was so powerless, only God’s strength and might would overcome David’s troubles.

  20. What is the Focus of Your Prayers? If you could listen to your prayers what percentage of your prayers focuses on yourself and your needs? What percentage of your prayers focuses on others and their needs? What percentage of your prayers focuses on giving God the glory due His name for all that He provides? 75% 85% 50% Good Balanced? 10% 75% 50% 5% 25% 50%
