Speech to The Second Continental Congress • Note the Argument- Counter Argument format used by Patrick Henry • He begins by politely acknowledging the merit of the opposing argument and claims that he feels it is duty to speak his opinion.- Paying credence to other side and giving background of debate • Patrick Henry is a master of the rhetorical question. • He uses the evidence of the advancing British troops as cause for military preparation- What else could the troops be for if not war?
Speech to The Second Continental Congress • He refutes the idea that the colonies should continue their pleas and remonstrance. “Our petitions have been slighted; our remonstrances have produced additional violence and insults…there is no longer room for hope.” • After a rather calm opening, Patrick explodes into “We must fight!” … “The war is inevitable– and let it come.” • Conclusion- “I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!”
