What Was It?? • A group of people that met briefly to consider options that included an economic boycott of British trade, publish a list of rights and grievances, and petition King George for redress of those grievances.
Who Was In It?? • Twelve of the 13 colonies sent delegates • Some of the most prominent people of the era were among the 55 delegates, including: George Washington, Samuel Adams, John Adams, Patrick Henry, Richard Henry Lee, John Jay, and John Dickinson • They were mostly people of social standing • Many were initially unknown to one another and vast differences existed on some of the issues

When Was This?? • September 5th, 1774 • They got together in Philadelphia’s Carpenters Hall • The idea of such a meeting was advanced a year earlier by Benjamin Franklin, but failed to gain support until after the Port of Boston was closed because of the Boston Tea Party
Why Did This Happen?? • The Congress met briefly to consider options • The options included: ~an economic boycott of British trade ~ publish a list of rights and grievances ~ a petition to King George for redress of those Grievances
What Were the Accomplishments? • There were two accomplishments • One; a compact among the colonies to boycott British goods beginning on December 1, 1774 • The boycott was successful but it was cut off by the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War • Second; to provide for a Second Continental Congress to meet on May 10, 1775
