Delphi • The ancient Greeks believed the center of the world was Delphi. • It was the most holy city to the ancient Greeks. • Delphi was best known for its oracle. A priestess gave prophecies for the future. • Many pilgrims traveled to Delphi for advice.
Treasury Houses • A major procession route winds its way through Delphi. • Many city-states built “treasury buildings” along this route. • These small temples housed offerings the city-states were making to the oracle and the god, Apollo.
Why? • Why do you think Greek city states spent money and time to build these temples? • What did they expect to get out of it?
Assignment • Your task: • Work with your group to pick a city-state that you will represent. • Read the fact sheet on your city state • Complete a planning guide for your city state. • Design a treasury house for your city state using at least features of Greek architecture (see purple handout for help). • Design sculpture for your treasury house that celebrates your city-state. It must include factual information. • Include the name or image of your city state’s patron god • Write an inscription for your treasury house proclaiming your city-state’s claim to fame.
