Agenda • Which way should I go ? • Enroute considerations • Which airport at Las Vegas ? • What to see once I’m there ? • Questions
Which way should we go ? • Straight over the mountains • Dodge SUAs, MOAs, and R-xxxx • Southern route - BFL
Thoughts ? • Oxygen use (FAR 91.211) 30 mins > 12.5K • Does your plane go that high ? • Density altitude … • Where to land ?
Thoughts ? • MOAs – what’s in a MOA … • “Pilots operating under VFR should exercise extreme caution while flying within a MOA when military activity is being conducted. “ • GPS or help from Joshua Approach • Where do I land when the fan stops ?
Thoughts ? • 30 minutes longer (10 gallons) • Lot’s of places to land • Places to get fuel • I-5 , & I-15 for reference • My choice, but you’re PIC…
Agenda • Which way should I go ? • Enroute considerations • Which airport at Las Vegas ? • What to see once I’m there ? • Questions
Weather considerations • Icing • Altitude, IFR • Winds • Mountains • Up / down drafts • Turbulence • Time of day • Night • Lack of horizon • Spectacular view of the “Strip”
Fuel planning • Fuel adds weight, and you’ve got hills to climb … • Smaller planes are at the limit • Consider stopping in Bakersfield (KBFL) beforeor General Fox (GWF) after the Tehachapis • You’ll need to get some for the trip home • Hint : LAS is *NOT* the place to buy it !

Where to go ? • McCarran - KLAS • Henderson - KHND • North Las Vegas - KVGT
Approaching KLAS • APCH will vector over KHND, and the to approach end of runways 25L/R at 4500‘ (not lower!!). • Hint – load this waypoint into your GPS (N36 04.4, W115 11.8)] • Visually the LUXOR (pyramid shaped hotel) is directly at the other end of 25L/R and has a large light beam. • Depart heading 010 – i.e. downwind for 19R/L. • Be careful to follow all instructions, especially if they're busy. • If you are given 19R, make sure you land on the Runway. There is a taxiway that is as large as the runway
Other comments • The two FBOs are on the west side of the airport • They'll waive the expensive parking fee if you purchase enough of their expensive avgas. • Pay attention to ATC and do what you’re told. • Get familiar yourself with the landmarks noted on the chart, as they may use them and they don't have much free time for step-by-step instructions. • You’ll need a clearance before you call ground to taxi out – “B” airport …
Where to go ? • McCarran - KLAS • Henderson - KHND • North Las Vegas - KVGT
KHND - Henderson • 11 Miles S of Las Vegas • No “B” Clearance required • No IFR approaches (except visual) • Towered field • 5000’ & 6500’ Runways • $5/night tiedown • Fuel is cheaper than LAS • Enterprise rental cars • Taxis AVBL

What to see once I’m there ? • Hoover Dam • Ask LAS APCH for a Class B transition • Think about post 9/11 guidelines
What to do ? • Hoover Dam • Ask LAS APCH for a Class B transition • Think about post 9/11 guidelines • Grand Canyon • Special flight rules apply • You *NEED* the chart • A GPS is also very handy
