OBJECTIVES: • To identify key events in the history of Egypt’s New Kingdom • To explain why the Egyptian Empire declined • To summarize the Kushite conquest of Egypt
THE NEW KINGDOM OF EGYPT (OBJECTIVE 1) • The Egyptians overthrow the Hyskos government • The new pharaohs sought to strengthen Egypt by building an empire
EGYPT’S EMPIRE BUILDERS IN THE NEW KINGDOM • Equipped with bronze weapons and two-wheeled chariots, the Egyptians became conquerors.
NEW KINGDOM RULERS • Hatshepsut declares herself Pharaoh; encouraged trade. • Her son, Thutmose was more of a warlike ruler. (may have killed his mother)
THUTMOSE III • Pushed farther into Nubia (a region in Africa that straddled the upper Nile river) • Soldiers brought back gold, cattle, ivory, and slaves • Egypt was now an empire
THE EGYPTIANS AND THE HITTITES • Kept fighting with each other • Ramses II and a Hittite king made a treaty that promised “peace and brotherhood between us forever”
RAMSES II • Pharaoh: means “great house” • Lived to the age of 99 and had 150 children • Egypt’s last great pharaoh
THE EMPIRE DECLINES (OBJECTIVE 2) • After Ramses II death, Egypt was hit with waves of attacks • Never fully recovered • Numerous small kingdoms rose out of the ashes
THE KUSHITES CONQUER THE NILE REGION(OBJECTIVE 3) • Nubia lay south of Egypt • Egypt had ruled Nubia earlier • Nubia adopted many of Egypt’s customs and traditions
THE GOLDEN AGE OF MEROE • Capital of Kushite kingdom • Kushite kings lived like pharaohs • Kushite had a slow decline caused by the rival power, Aksum
