Mishna Mavens PEREKVAV MISHNA ALEF
What bracha do we make on fruits?
On fruit that grows on trees, we make borei pri ha-etz
Not so fast... THERE’S AN EXCEPTION TO THE RULE!
Even though grapes grow on the tree, we make borei pri ha-gafen on wine.
Wine is special • Wine is made from grapes – but has a special bracha rishona, since it is used for special occasions: • Kiddush, Havdalah, Weddings • The special bracha rishona shows that it has a special “status”
We make borei pri ha-adama on food that grows in the ground
Not so fast... THERE’S AN EXCEPTION TO THE RULE!
Even though grains grow in the ground, we make a special blessing on bread: Ha-motzi lechem min ha-aretz.
Bread is special • Bread is used to show that a meal has special significance: • Shabbat, Yom Tov, Seudat Mitzvah • The special bracha rishona shows that it has a special “status” • We also recite a special bracha acharona after eating bread • Birkat HaMazon
