“Human” vs. “New” Life-Context • Human Life-Context • Those fallen into the power of sin • “Human nature outside of Christ” • Those who belong to the world: • Sinners • Those who participate in sin • Those who experience the judgment of sin • New Life-Context • Those no longer in the “world” • “World” crucified to them and them to it • Those no longer conformed to the “world”
Universality of Sin • Rom. 3:10-20 – None are righteous • Rom. 3:23 – All have sinned • Rom. 5:12-21 • Not about universality of sin • Not about how sin is propagated • But a connection with Christ’s righteousness & life • And a connection with Adam’s sin & death • Through Adam sin was given access to the world • Death emphasized as the result of sin
Universality of Sin • Flesh (defined) • All that is man • All that is sinful in man • Flesh is Represented by Paul as: • Human weakness • Dependence on God • That which is perishable • Man in his sin and depravity • Human Being / Sinner • Emphasis not on individual sins of a man, but the power of sin over all.
