  1. 4 NEW TESTAMENT FOOLS MATTHEW 25:1-13

  2. Some people are fooled • April 1 – April Fool’s Day • Some people are gullible for practical jokes and fall for tricks • The root word for fool in the Bible is “stupid, absurd, heedless or unintelligent” • We all have done – stupid, foolish, and absurd things.

  3. Some people are fooled • Psalm 53:1 - The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, and have done abominable iniquity; There is none who does good. • Our New Testament speaks of 4 kinds of foolish people

  4. 1 – The unprepared fool • 1 "Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Now five of them were wise, and five were foolish. 3Those who were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them, 4 but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. Matthew 25:1-4

  5. 1 – The unprepared fool • Jesus is preparing a place (heaven) for those who are prepared to enter • 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. 4 And where I go you know, and the way you know." John 14:3-4

  6. 1 – The unprepared fool • The difference in the 5 wise and 5 who were foolish - - • The wise were prepared • AHEAD OF TIME – NOT AFTER THE FACT • When the trumpet sounds, resurrection occurs, and Christ comes for His own, preparation will not be possible

  7. 2 – The materialistic fool • Serve the material and fleshly rather than God • 19 And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry." ' 20 But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?' 21 So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God." Luke 12:19-21

  8. 2 – The materialistic fool • Rich Young Ruler – Luke 18:18-25 – shows the bondage of things • Zaccheus – Luke 19:13 – shows that freedom is possible • Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold." 9 And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; Luke 19:8-9

  9. 2 – The materialistic fool • The issue – No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon." Luke 16:13 • The consequence - For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost? Luke 9:25

  10. 3 – The legalistic fool • Trusts in self-righteousness rather than God. • Many think that righteousness is “rule keeping.” • In the meantime we miss the value and importance of personal fellowship with God.

  11. 3 – The legalistic fool • 10 "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank You that I am not like other men--extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.' Luke 18:10-12

  12. 3 – The legalistic fool • Matthew 23 – Jesus calls them hypocrites • Paul gives an example – For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God. Romans 10:3

  13. 3 – The legalistic fool • Another example in formality - having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! 2 Timothy 3:5 • 20 Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations-- 21 "Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle," Colossians 2:20-21

  14. 4 – The rationalistic fool • Trusts his own reasoning rather than God’s Word • Thinks his thoughts and philosophy have more value than the Word of God • 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, Romans 1:21-22

  15. 4 – The rationalistic fool • The simple things are beneath him • 18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent."1 Corinthians 1:18-19

  16. 4 – The rationalistic fool • 27 But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; 28 and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, 1 Corinthians 1:27-28

  17. conclusion • It is foolish to be UNPREPARED • It is foolish to have faith in MATERIAL things. • It is foolish to trust in our form, customs and rituals and bind them on others in a LEGALISTIC way. • It is foolish to try to be RATIONAL and out-think God.
