  2. What is an appositive? • An appositive is extra information in the sentence that renames or gives further information about the noun it follows. • Appositives are placed inside commas. Mary, my aunt from Chicago, is visiting us. The best part of our vacation was the visit to the Golden Gate Bridge, a structure that four years to complete.

  3. Why appositives? • Appositives are great ways to combine sentences and add interest to your writing. Uncle Henry lives in Ohio. Uncle Henry is a reporter for a national news network. Combined: Uncle Henry, a reporter for a national news network, lives in Ohio.

  4. Give it a try. • Mr. and Mrs. Smith have a new dog. • They are our neighbors. • The house looks haunted and lonely. • The house once was home to a family of thirteen.
