Quadratic Functions • quadratic function: A quadratic function is a function that can be written in the form y = ax2 + bx + c, where a ≠ 0. This form is called the standard form of a quadratic function.
Parabolas • parabola: The graph of a quadratic function is called a parabola. • The line that divides the parabola in to two matching halves is the axis of symmetry.
Vertex • vertex: The highest or lowest point of a parabola is its vertex, which is on the axis of symmetry. If a > 0 in y = ax2 + bx + c, the parabola opens upward and the vertex is the minimum point of the parabola. If a < 0 in y = ax2 + bx + c, the parabola opens downward and the vertex is the maximum point of the parabola.
Graphing Quadratic Functions: • The value of a in y = ax2 + bx + c also tells us how wide the parabola is. • x = -b/(2a) is the equation of the vertical line that is the line of symmetry of the parabola and it is the x-coordinate of the vertex of the parabola. • c is the y-intercept of the parabola.
