Phrases & Clauses • A clause is a group of words that contain a subject and predicate. • Independent clause: a complete sentence • Subordinate/dependent clause: a fragment—incomplete sentence. • A phrase is a group of words that contain a subject OR a predicate—never both.
Phrase or Clause • The deer ran into the woods • Running into the store • The man with the white shirt • That are in the classroom. • Jesse & Trevor aced their essays. • When I grow up • I ran • Get your homework done • Because they were done early
