Folk Artists • Often from rural areas, not big cities • More like craftsmen • Traditional perspective not always used
Edward Hicks • Born in a small Pennsylvania town • Orphaned at age 3 • Brought up by a prosperous local farming family • At 13 he was apprenticed to a coach maker, learnt to paint details and decoration • By age 20 he was a skilled, elaborate coach painter • Age 33 he turned from coach painting to easel painting • No formal training or learning how to paint on board or canvas
