Social Cohesion, Diversity, and Fundamental Values 1) Worldviews: values, ideals (also for society) • Communities: churches, zendo, movements (animals), mosques • Freedom of organisation 2) Modern complex society needs social cohesion and virtues (Who will guard the guards?) The state depends on value-traditions and can facilitate them • Infrastructures (unequal structures)

  8. State & Islamicorganisations The state cooperates with Isl. organisations: • to help Muslims to become members of the EU states in their own right • for social cohesion • and for the security reasons

  9. FundamentalValues of the State • The troublesome discussion on Leitkultur, identité française, and constitutional values • Common values are not innate • they have grown in history • Diversity requires dialogue (and education)

Equal Treatment of Unequal Traditions • National representation of Muslims in EU-countries • Pace laity, pace Landeshoheit • Islamic States (e.g. Egypt, Morocco) • ministers of religious affairs appoint imams • traditional education • Mosques of guestworkers • Turkish (also free Islamic movements) • Mediterrenian: loose organisations (network)

Equaltreatment & integration • Respect diversity and the nature of those other traditions—also in representation • Advice: • high-quality education on Islam, • Educate imams who are at home in Western society & academia and are authentically Muslim • Dialogue instead of privatisation of religion
