Aims and Outcomes of this Session • To gain a shared understanding of what enterprise learning is and why its important • Allow departments/individuals to audit current practice and identify current WBL & E activities. • To plan future activities and opportunities for WBL & E in the future.

Enterprise “Enterprise and education are central to the future prosperity for us all as individuals, as communities and as a nation. Young people must gain experience and understanding of enterprise, business and the economy and financial literacy, if they are to develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes essential in a changing labour market” DfES
What is Enterprise Education? Enterprise Capability This is innovation, creativity, risk management, risk taking and a can-do attitude and the drive to make ideas happen. To happen the following two strands must be taught successfully. Financial Capability The ability to manage ones own finances and to become questioning and informed consumers of financial services; and…… Business & Economic Understanding The ability to understand the business context and make informed choices between alternative uses of scarce resources.
Why is Enterprise Important to Us? • Equipping pupils as enterprising learners is at the very heart of good education – less spoon feeding! • Clear potential for raising standards across the curriculum. • Promotes confidence, self – reliance and determination to succeed. • Develops understanding, skills and attributes that are vital to lifelong learning and the future economy. • We have the funding and a statutory requirement to do it!
Students are expected to: • Take responsibility for their own actions • Be given autonomy to tackle problems • Weigh up risk and reward when tackling problems These are qualities good lessons/teaching should contain. In many cases what you do simply needs to be identified within your SofW and to the pupils.

So- what can you do? • Enterprise is whole school- not just Business Studies or you! • Encourage development of Enterprise Skills and an Enterprising way of thinking across the curriculum • Encourage all departments to use 4 stage model for project work (and highlight it before, during and after) • Build business links- use one INSET day for teacher placements (2007-8) • Use business examples in teaching- How does your subject relate to the ‘real world’? Pupils want to know this. Why! • Within departments, ensure the delivery of WRL themes- evidence in SOW and lessons- intro/plenary • Encourage students to record evidence of Enterprise skills • Re-label project work- drip feed the idea of Enterprise and Enterprise skills
