Sleeping:How Does It Affect Eating? • Alexander Paulzen Science Minute Presentation
About Sleeping • At least 8-9 hours • Busy People-5 hours • Weight Gain/Obesity (unlimited access) • Requires Energy-Staying up • Sleeping-Burning Calories
Extra sleeping, No weight loss. May help with healthy weight and obesity Getting less sleep=No weight gain Insufficient sleep, leads to eating more than necessary Kenneth Wright-leading the research Hypothesis, not clear Experts Said...
Making An Experiment • Monitoring 16 young&healthy adults • In a sealed room-researchers measuring energy used (O2 CO2) • Everyone: first 3 days-sleeping 9 hours&eating meals with necessary calories • Than, split into 2 groups: 1-5 days with 5 hours sleep, 2-5 days with 9 hours sleep
Making An Experiment Continued • Both groups: large meals, snack throughout the day (fruit-potato chips) • Switched • 5 hours: 5% more energy burned • 5 hours: consumed 6% more calories • 5 hours: eat smaller breakfast, eat a lot after-dinner snacks • Evening snacks-more than an individual meal • Adds to evidence: Overeating at night=weight gain
Conclusion/Findings • People that are sleep restricted: Eat during their minds night time (not designed to) • Men and women reacted differently to food • Men: gained weight even if they had a good sleep (when they could eat as much as they want) • Women: Maintained their weight after a good sleep (even though they could eat as much as they want) • Both gained weight-5 hours • Research funded by health institutions
