  1. How Patient Experience of Primary Health Care is related to UK Government Policies and General Practice developments Dr Jill Wilson Charlotte Wilson Taunton, Somerset Introduction: Since the introduction of the National Health Service more than 60 years ago many governments have attempted to reform the system. Over the same time scale there have been many changes in primary care and the education of GPs. But what has this done for patient experience? 1988- 1997 1958- 1967 1968- 1977 1978- 1987 2008- now 1948- 1957 “Post-war austerity” “Swinging sixties” “Industrial Unrest” “Dawn of Thatcherism” “Rise of Consumerism” 1998- 2007 “A More Caring Welfare State” “More Change on the Horizon” Conclusion: From being passive receivers of care, it is clear that patients have moved to a central position in decision-making. While this may be the stated intent of sequential government policies, its success will depend on GPs’ continued readiness to engage and educate themselves as well as their patients.
