  2. About • On May 22, 2011, Joplin was hit by an EF5 tornado! (that’s the worst kind) • The town has come a long way since this disaster, thanks to volunteers like you!

Your role • We will be helping to create housing opportunities for families in the Joplin area who are still trying to return home after the tornado • All projects are construction-related, ranging from small repairs to building brand-new houses. • Roles include: site preparation, hanging insulation or drywall, sanding, texturing, priming, painting, and preparing the home for homeowners to move in • Our work schedule will depend on how many volunteers are present **Specific activities may vary depending on the specific needs of the organization at time of arrival.**

  4. Trip Details • Located in Joplin, Missouri • 580 miles away. About 9hours. • Leaving from UIC: Dec 15th • Returning to UIC: Dec 21st • Sleeping arrangements are made at Byers Avenue United Methodist Church. • With Wi-Fi • We will be taking a trip to a local grocery store to get food for the week. A kitchen will be provided at the Church.

What to bring • Volunteer clothes (things you don’t mind getting dirty or paint stained) • Layers that include long sleeved shirts and long pants for the cold weather and insulation work • Gloves? and safety glasses • Sturdy tennis shoes and/or work boots – YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO WORK ON SITE WITHOUT THESE • Towels, sleeping bags, toiletries

Free day!! • Candy House Chocolate Factory- take a tour of the factory and buy some sweet, locally made treats • Grand falls- the largest, natural waterfall in Missouri • Give back to the church for graciously hosting ASB for the week. Includes: card, cleaning etc. • Ideas are open for discussion. • If anyone has any great ideas…. please suggest them!
