EASTER CUSTOMS AND SYMBOLS The Easter Candle During the Revival night, the Christians are coming to the church. Every one of them has a candle in their hands, and this candle will be lightened from the candle carried around by the priest and taken from the Hollly Altar table. This candle is the symbol of the Revivial, of the thiumph of life over death and of the Christ’s light over the darkness of the sin. Many people keep the candle at home and they burn it over the year if there are any troubles in their houses. At the end of the mass, the priest share with everybody the Holly Easter bread, which is a bread with a hint of wine and aghiazmă.

Some foods are mandatory on the Easter table: red eggs, the soft cow cheese, the salad with green onion and radish, the drob and the lamb chopstick, the Holly Easter bread with cheese, sourcream and recently added, chocolate.
Red Eggs The eggs represent the tomb with life inside of Jesus Christ, that opened when He wake up from the deaths. When Christians are meeting with each other they are touching the eggs, one againt the other, and they say „Jesus Christ has revived”, the other person says „This is true, he revived”. The color red simbolized the blood of Jesus, which was spelt on the cross for saving the humanity. The story is that the Saint Mary put a basket with eggs under the cross for the soldiers and the eggs are getting red from Jesus’s blood. The egg with different symbols are an example of different customs, beliefs, and Easter traditions, being one of the most valuable spiritual element of our people and defining our etnicity.
The Easter Bread The Easter bread is baked by the Christians women only once per year, for Easter. It is a round bread because the believe is the Jesus’s diapers were rounds. The bread has a cross in the middle, and it has other forms around its margins. When the bread is introduced into the oven, the women from the country side make a cross with the shovel on the oven’s walls.
The Lamb The Christians families are eating lamb each Easter, accordingly to the tradition. The lamb symbolizes our Savior, Jesus Chist, who gave his life for the world’s sins and died on the cross like a lamb. Our prayers for the blessing of the lambs started from the VII century. After that century, the lamb steak became the main Easter meal for all the Christians. In Europe, the lamb is also cooked with butter, pasta or sugar.
