  1. Ecosystems Day Two

  2. Think – Pair – ShareDo biotic and abiotic factors affect each other?

  3. Eco logy Ecology the study of the relationships between biotic and abiotic factors in environments… their “home” Eco - = home -logy = study of ecoclimate ecosystem zoology climatology

  4. Ecosystem is a system where abiotic and biotic factors interact with each other in a particular area. Biotic Factors Abiotic Factors the living parts of an ecosystem the nonliving parts of an ecosystem

  5. Examples of Ecosystems Coral Reef in Belize Mountains in Colorado Arizona Desert

  6. How do they interact with each other?

  7. If there is no water…can anything grow or survive? If it is extremely cold one winter, will that affect whether an animal makes it? Do biotic and abiotic factors affect each other?

  8. If there is no water…can anything grow or survive? No! If it is extremely cold one winter, will that affect whether an animal makes it? Yes! So, abiotic and biotic DO affect each other. Even though water and temperature aren’t living things, they DO affect living things! Do biotic and abiotic factors affect each other?

  9. Ecosystem Interactions do not necessarily have clear boundaries due to biotic and abiotic changes can change daily as things move from one ecosystem to another Biotic Abiotic migration, seed dispersal, overpopulation flood, erosion, drought

  10. Biotic Factors interact with each other in complex ways parasitism mutualism competition such as also interact with abiotic factors in the ecosystem dependent upon water, minerals, temperature, light

  11. How do we organize it all?

  12. Engage: Organization Activity Read the following passage then work with your partner. A student lives in an apartment with his family in the Gateways Apartment Complex. The apartment complex is located in the Regency neighborhood of the city Starville. The city of Starville is located in Denton county in the state of Texas. Task: Identify the six locations used to describe where the student lives. Put them in order from the most precise location to the broadest.

  13. ecosystem community population organism Levels of Organization one individual living thing all organisms of the same kind living in one area all living and nonliving things interacting within a certain area all interacting populations in an ecosystem

  14. Engage Activity – Card Sort With your partner, examine all the cards carefully. Determine whether they represent an organism, a population, a community, or an ecosystem.
