Agenda • Introductions • What is ELL? ELL stands for English Language Learners. This program supports students who have some knowledge of English and need to reinforce academic language and further improve their reading and writing skills.
Entrance Criteria • All students are given: • an IPT ( Idea Proficiency test) is given at the beginning of the year to determine their English level. • “Running Record” which is a reading comprehension and accuracy test. • Writing sample. • Teacher observations are taken into account to determine if they are going to be placed in the ELL program.
Level 2 • Level 2 • Level 2 students can understand simple oral requests. They speak with hesitancy and difficulty. These students are capable of conducting a simple conversation. Classwork still needs to be modified. Level 2 students will remain for the entire literacy block (reading /writing) in the ELL class. • Anticipated Program Duration: 1 to 2 Semesters • Sample Performance Indicators: • Follows two-step directions • Uses common “chunks” for greeting and courtesy • Begins to express needs and basic information • Begins to use English in social situations • Begins to read books with simple patterns • Reads independently for short periods of time • Participates in shared reading • Retells beginning, middle and end with guidance • Begins to write short narratives with beginning, middle and end • Begins to add more details, revise and edit writing
Level 3 • Level 3 • Level 3 students understand most parts of the classroom lesson allowing them to participate academically. At this level students can read, retell and write in English making attempts to elaborate. At this level, students require very little or no class work modifications. Level 3 ELL students, up to a year below the reading standard of the grade level, will form part of the homeroom heterogeneous reading groups and will only attend ELL classes for writing. • Anticipated Program Duration: 1 to 2 Semesters • Sample Performance Indicators: • Follows multi-step directions • Understands classroom and subject area language • Attempts to speak with confidence in a group • Retells stories • Uses reading strategies successfully • Understand word families and patterns • Drafts basic to more complex stories/descriptions • Follows the writing process (prewrites, drafts, revises, edits, publishes)
Level 4 • Level 4 • Level 4 are students that speak and understand without difficulty. Their reading and writing skills are approaching or are at grade level standard. They read and write text which contains more complex vocabulary, sentence structure and grammatical conventions. Their writing might still reflect inconsistent mastery of grammatical conventions. Level 4 ELL students will remain in their homeroom for the entire literacy block, unless they need help with specific writing or research projects. In that case, they would go to the ELL class for support. • Anticipated Program Duration: 1 to 2 Semesters • Sample Performance Indicators: • Responds to more complex questions • Persuades, argues and negotiates • Listens to others and contributes to group discussions • Asks questions to clarify understanding • Understands and uses most reading strategies • Reads for enjoyment independently • Follows the writing process successfully • Main ideas and themes are well developed • Revises and is able to elaborate written work • Edits for punctuation, capitalization and spelling independently
Exit Criteria • There are several tools to measure when a student is ready to exit the ELL program: • Report card grades • Internal common assessments ( in writing/ reading and oral language) • Standardized tests (MAP and ISA) • Homeroom teacher’s observations • ELL teacher observations • IPT ELL assessment
